In many ways, Agilebits should want to hand that responsibility to either Apple, Google, or Dropbox, as they are much less likely to roll over or be compromised vis-a-vis law enforcement or hackers.

Yes, I understand that the vault itself is encrypted, but wouldn't you want some one with LOTS of money and a REALLY vested interest in protecting your data to handle your syncing? I say this not as regards to reliability, but security - who's better able to resist over-broad court orders, legal fishing expeditions, or other threats to their business - Apple or Agilebits? That being said, I think from a user perspective, it's really hard to prefer their cloud sync vs iCloud (specifically). I love 1Password, have been a customer for many years, and I'm happy to give them money. You know, I really wonder about each tom, dick, and harry service running their own sync platforms.

I favor the built in sync because it's less things to install and Dropbox software is obnoxious and brittle, especially on MacOS. And 1Password isn't perfect, I believe they leaked encrypted vault contents due to a Cloudflare security incident. Worth noting Dropbox security is actually quite good, they support 2FA with recovery codes. I used Dropbox sync until I switched to subscription. A subscription model introduces different methods to screwing over customers, but a subscription model does not inherently imply a guaranteed path towards screwing over the customer. When AgileBits screwing over their customers could happen regardless of whether they have a subscription model or not, at any time between now and whenever.
